A message from the New England Committee Chair

Dear Association Members and Friends,

Since its inception in 2004, the New England chapter of the American Australian Association has been dedicated to programs and events that foster alliances between the American, Australian and New Zealand communities.

In January 2009, the American Australian Association, New England hosted "Celebrate Australia in Boston", showcasing 15 Australian wines and an innovative menu of Australian food pairings. With support from Qantas Airways, Wine Australia and G’Day USA, the evening's program included special guest speaker and Australian wine expert, James Gosper; and performances by award-winning Boston-based Australian musicians Simon Tedeschi and Scott Borg. Corporate table hosts included Lexington Partners, Qantas Airways and Brown Brothers Harriman. Maria Stephanos, local Boston celebrity and news anchor, emceed the evening.

With its large student population and resident academics and researchers, the American Australian Association meets the needs of the Australian and New Zealander expatriate community in New England through programs such as the annual Resident Alien Survival Seminar. At this popular Fall event, attendees gain access to up-to-date expert advice from a range of legal, tax and professional service providers. Previous presenters have included Australian specialists from Global Tax Network US, LLC; Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen and Loewy, LLP; and Vacovec, Mayotte & Singer, LLP.

Building on the audience base for Boston premieres of Australian films such as Shine, Oyster Farmer and Australia, the American Australian Association in New England hosts an annual Australian short film event. Curated by Australian, Susan Talbot, Australian Short Film Today is an engaging selection of award-winning short films by young filmmakers, drawn from the Australian and international film festival circuits.

One of the most important dates in the American Australian Association’s calendar of events in New England is our annual Anzac Day service. Taking place in the Chapel of the Emmanuel Church on Newbury Street in Boston, this service in the past has been led by Father Jeremy Clarke SJ, who was ordained at St Mary's parish in North Sydney and is presently teaching at Boston College. A reception follows the service and is an opportunity for American, Australian and New Zealand families and individuals to meet over refreshments.

We thank you for your support and look forward to welcoming you to our events in New England.
