A Night To Remember – 2024 Benefit Dinner

On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the American Australian Association hosted its Annual Benefit Dinner at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, drawing distinguished guests from both sides of the Pacific. This year’s event was not only a memorable celebration but a historic milestone for the Association, raising a record US$1.8 million in support of its ongoing mission to strengthen U.S.-Australian ties and fund scholarship programs.

The evening marked an extraordinary accomplishment, with guests, loyal sponsors, and honorees joining together to make the achievement possible. In his opening remarks, Ambassador John Berry (Ret.), President of the Association, acknowledged the unwavering support of attendees and partners, highlighting the impact of their contributions on critical scholarships and initiatives that connect, inspire, and empower individuals.

Honoring Outstanding Achievements and a Lifetime of Dedication

The night was dedicated to honoring James P. Gorman, who received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, and Yvette Ostolaza, recognized for her groundbreaking contributions to the legal field and her role as a trailblazer for diversity and leadership. The event featured an engaging fireside chat between Gorman and Steve Hasker, providing the audience with insights into Gorman’s influential career and his perspective on leadership and transpacific relations.

Guests were treated to a performance by Australian-American country music sensation Keith Urban, whom Berry warmly referred to as the Association’s favorite “Nashtralian.” Urban’s performance resonated with the crowd, creating a shared moment of celebration that capped off the formal program on a high note.

A Tribute to Ambassador John Berry’s Legacy

As Ambassador Berry prepares to retire at the end of the year, the Association paid tribute to his eight years of dedicated service. To honor his legacy, the Association introduced a new scholarship in his name: the Ambassador John Berry (Ret.) Impact Award. This award will continue Berry’s vision of nurturing strong U.S.-Australian ties by supporting individuals who demonstrate exceptional potential to make a meaningful impact in this vital relationship.

Scholarships That Drive Medical Advancements

With over half of the Association’s scholarships historically dedicated to medical research, this year’s Benefit Dinner provided a fitting platform to celebrate key partnerships that are shaping the future of healthcare. A special thanks was given to Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. Under the leadership of Sarah Murdoch, MCRI continues to make strides in childhood heart disease, thanks to the pioneering work of Professor Enzo Porrello. St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, represented by Anna McFadgen and Professor Jason Kovacic, announced two new scholarships and highlighted the lifesaving potential of the Bivacor total artificial heart, a breakthrough in cardiac care.

Two scholar speakers, representing the Class of 2024, Dr. Joel Maamary and Dr. Athena Stein, took the stage to share their experiences, offering an inspiring look at the profound impact of the American Australian Association’s scholarship program. Their presentations underscored the critical role these scholarships play in advancing research and innovation, enabling scholars to make significant contributions in fields that benefit communities across both nations.

Recognition of Key Partners and Generous Sponsors

The success of this year’s Benefit Dinner was bolstered by the steadfast support of the Association’s top sponsors. Special recognition went to Benefactors Fox, News Corp, Pratt Industries, Morgan Stanley, Sidley, and KKR. Platinum Partners included BlueScope Steel, David Solomon, The Walt Disney Company, Mastercard, McKinsey & Company, Sarah & Peter Beshar, St Vincent’s Curran Foundation, and Qantas, while CSL, Macquarie, and Rio Tinto supported as Gold Sponsors. Each of these partnerships plays an essential role in fostering the Association’s mission and initiatives. Guests also left with curated gift bags, generously provided by partners Darrell Lea, Glasshouse, and Bluestone Lane.
