Scholar Spotlight: Michael Grebla, Shom Goel, Hai Tu, Nerita Lewis

Dr. Shom Goel was awarded an American Australian Association – Merck Scholarship in 2011, which supported the post-doc he was undertaking at Harvard University. Shom returned to Melbourne to head his own cancer research lab (Goel Lab) at Peter Macallum Cancer Centre in 2019. Shom and his lab have just been awarded a US Department of Defense ‘Era of Hope Scholarship’, receiving a USD $3 million research grant for his continuing work on senescent cancer cells.

Michael Grebla was recently awarded the Spectrum Chamber Music Society’s 2024 Composition Award for his composition Piano Trio No. 1: In Search of Peace. In addition to the award, the work will receive its North American Premiere by the group in Fort Worth, Texas later this year.

Flight Lieutenant Nerita Lewis recently spoke at our Anzac Day Veterans’ Lunch. She shared her exceptionally admirable story of serving her country, creating her own business, and coping with chronic pain stemming from injuries sustained from service.

Nerita Lewis is the Founder of Jaspen Health. The vision is to support the 1 in 5 people who live with chronic pain, focusing on veterans. A pain management program is being developed featuring neuroscience, education, and self-management techniques. Nerita holds four university degrees. Awarded a Churchill Fellowship, she completed international research on veterans living with chronic pain in 2023. She is an alumnus of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue and was awarded an American Australian Association Veterans’ Scholarship, which supports her health care delivery studies at Harvard University.

Hai Tu was awarded the Queensland University of Technology’s prestigious Business School International Postgraduate Prize for achieving the highest GPA in all subjects.
