The American Australian Association proudly announces the appointment of Steven Marshall as its new President, effective January 1, 2025.
Steven served as the 46th Premier of South Australia from 2018 to 2022, and brings with him significant public and private sector experience. Mr. Marshall succeeds Ambassador John Berry, who joined the Association as President in 2016 after serving as U.S. Ambassador to Australia from 2012 to 2016.
Association Chair Craig Chapman states “The Board is thrilled that Steven will take over the Presidency of the Association, but sad to see John go after his eight year tenure, during which John lead a historic expansion of our fundraising, scholarship and other funding, event programing, and public and private partnerships across the United States and Australia. We thank John for all he has done for the Association and the American Australian alliance. At the same time, I know that Steven, with his extensive public and private sector experience in Australia and the United States and with the full support of the Association’s Board, is the right person to lead the Association to new and impactful heights in its support of American Australian relations.”
While Premier of South Australia, Mr. Marshall concurrently held the positions of Minister for Defense, Space, and Cyber, as well as Minister for the Arts, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs. Mr. Marshall led a strategic transformation of the state’s economy, focusing on future industries such as advanced manufacturing, space, and defense. His leadership was instrumental in positioning South Australia as a global hub for innovation, attracting significant investments in the tech, defense, energy, and film sectors.
A passionate supporter of the arts, Mr. Marshall’s commitment to cultural development was evident throughout his political career. His dedication to veterans’ affairs also played a crucial role in his government’s policies.
Currently, Mr. Marshall serves as the Chair of the Australian Advisory Council for MITRE, where he continues to advance Australia’s space, cyber, and tech industries, promoting collaboration with global partners, especially the United States. His commitment to strengthening American Australian relations is further exemplified by his role as a Governor of the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (AmCham).
As President of the American Australian Association, Steven will work alongside the Board of Directors and members to advance the Association’s mission of fostering closer ties between the United States and Australia. His leadership will help expand initiatives that encourage greater collaboration in trade, defense, education, and cultural exchange.
