
The American Association of Australasian Literary Studies (AAALS), together with the American Australian Association, welcomes submissions to the second annual creative writing competition, which includes the following three prizes:
- AAALS Fiction and Nonfiction Prize
- AAALS Poetry Prize
- AAALS Indigenous Writers Prize (NEW)
The winner of each prize will be awarded:
- US$500
- Publication in Antipodes journal (subject to editorial revisions)
- Hard copy of the journal in which work is published
- Online poetry reading co-sponsored by the American Australian Association

Entry Fee
Free to AAALS members or US$20 per submission for non-AAALS members. Submission payments can be made online via PayPal (https://paypal.com) to [email protected]. Or become a member of AAALS by visiting http://aaals.org/membership/. The entry fee includes a one-year digital subscription to the journal Antipodes.

Entry Conditions
- The AAALS Fiction and Nonfiction Prize is open to Australian and New Zealand residents and citizens and may be no more than 3,500 words in length.
- The AAALS Poetry Prize is open to Australian and New Zealand residents and citizens and may be no more than 100 lines in length.
- The AAALS Indigenous Writers Prize is open to Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, or Māori writers, and the submission may be in fiction, nonfiction, or poetry that adheres to the previously specified length requirements.
- Submissions must be unpublished (including online).
- The prize is open to writers over the age of 18.
- The competition will be judged anonymously. The author’s name must not appear on the submitted document or the submission will be disqualified.
- Multiple submissions are welcome if the author meets the entry criteria. While AAALS members are welcome to submit multiple entries at no cost, non-AAALS members must pay for every additional submission.
- The prize will be awarded at the judges’ discretion, and they reserve the right to not select a winner. Furthermore, the judges’ decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into. However, if you have queries regarding entry, please email: [email protected].
