Under no circumstances will the American Australian Association fund an individual who was previously given a scholarship or grant.

No. It is the responsibility of the applicant to obtain the necessary immigration visa and to abide by the visa conditions set. In most cases, the applicant's home university or their destination university will assist with these arrangements.

A short list of applicants will be contacted to undertake an interview with management of the American Australian Association. These interviews will be conducted by video conference in January. Successful applicants will be notified soon thereafter.

Completed applications will be confirmed within 24-hours via an automated message.

All applicants are required to complete an online application form. You will be required to set-up a site account. Within your account you can save, leave and go back to your application at any time before submitting by the due date. You will be required to upload supporting documents to this online form. We encourage applicants to download their application as they go, in case of any unanticipated technical difficulties.

The American Australian Association opens two scholarship rounds each year. ROUND ONE: AUSTRALIA TO USA (A-U) - Application period is open from 1 Jan - 30 Mar, each year. (subject to change, please check the scholarship page for more details) ROUND TWO: USA TO AUSTRALIA (U-A) - Application period is open from 1 Aug - 30 Sep, each year. (subject to change, please check the scholarship page for more details) Please note: The online application form is only accessible during these periods.  Complete applications must be received by the due deadlines to be considered.

Scholars are required to commence their research / study program within two-years of receiving the Scholarship Notification Letter of Offer from the American Australian Association.

No.  The Scholarship is solely to assist the applicant, and cannot be used to support dependents.

Yes. Scholars are responsible for payment of any and all taxes incurred. We strongly advise you to seek your own independent taxation counsel.

Yes. You may accept additional grants to satisfy your budget needs as described in the application form. However, you must detail in your application the type of grant(s) and amount(s) you have applied for, or received. The Association reserves the right to decline an application if the corresponding budget cannot be justified.

The Scholarship is intended to support a scholars' travel, living, tuition expenses or other associated educational costs. Download a budget template to use in your application here.

Yes.  You may have already have commenced your research / study in the Australia, for which you are seeking funding.

Yes.  You may have already have commenced your research / study in the US, for which you are seeking funding.

Yes. Programs of research or study must be at least one year in legnth to qualify for the scholarship. *Please note; if you are applying for the Sustainable Health Care Funding Scholarship, consideration will be given for shorter duration research projects, in exceptional cases.

No.  The American Australian Association does not support sabbaticals.

Study without a defined purpose is less compelling for a scholarship award. Applicants must explain why being in the Australia or the US is important to the development of their research / study and how this research / study will benefit the broader American-Australian relationship.

Applicants must be an American citizen or permanent resident; undertaking or intending to undertake research or study at a graduate level - Masters, Ph.D. and Postdoctoral in Australia. Applicants may already be in Australia and enrolled in a program at the time of application.

No. Applicants must make their own arrangements for university affiliation and have a confirmed placement at the time of application.

The American Australian Association awards Scholarships at the Graduate (Masters, Ph.D. and Postdoctoral) level of up to US $40,000 each year. Scholarships are available to Americans who will benefit from doing advanced research or study in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Sustainability, Medicine and Health Care Funding/Economics in Australia.  Scholars are expected to be Ambassadors for their country and should intend to contribute to American intellectual capital, as well as the country’s overall social and economic well-being upon their return.
